Why we stopped buying prints

About three years ago, just before my husband and I purchased our house, we decided to (mostly) stop buying prints, and focus our art collecting habit on original works.

There is definitely an argument for buying prints. Because prints are multiples, they are less rare, and therefore less expensive. If you’re on a budget (Who isn’t?) buying prints is better than not buying art at all. Like originals, prints still bring art into your home and your purchase supports the artist community (if you're buying from an artist, not a generic print-seller).

However, there is plenty of affordable original art and these are some of the reasons we decided to focus on collecting hand-made objects:

one of a kind originality

depth – original art fills a room more powerfully physically and emotionally

art-as-investment

befriending the art community

intentional collecting
